Like most of you I was born in this country, but probably unlike you I used to do rather badly at school as far as English was concerned. Позвольте представиться. Меня зовут Александр Газинский. Я автор данного курса. Как и большинство из Вас, я родился в этой стране, но, возможно, в отличие от Вас, я довольно плохо учился в школе, что касалось английского языка. И знаете почему? … I simply didn't take English seriously and naturally made no efforts to learn a single word, not to mention any grammar. School was soon over and a year later I joined the former Soviet Army honestly carrying out my civil duties out there in Poland. Thank Goodness, my military service shortly came to an end. I was 20 by then, and by mere chance, just before going back home, I had a throw at learning English. Most evidently on account of nothing to do, I suppose. But that's not the point. Fact was I made my first step by learning the ABC for a start. And I enjoyed that full blast! I vaguely recall my first textbook. Now I wish I'd never come across it. Then, however, I thought it was the best one! I kept on swallowing every word, line, text and page out of it. On arriving home, I made up my mind to enter one of the Moscow Teachers' Colleges. My English learning experience by then had already exceeded six months. Somehow I was confident I'd get into the college like a breeze. Right! My self-assuredness didn't let me down. I was now a freshman and alongside I found a part-time job as an interpreter at the Soviet Peace Committee, the SPC for short. I still wonder why they hired me! Truth to say, I knew a good deal of words, but I couldn't speak at all because I did not know how. I'd just spent the night before cramming a score of the most expected sentences and they, perhaps, figured out I was good at speaking, or what? … I guess they were as good a speaker as I was, huh? The worst thing occurred a bit later when I began to interpret for my first SPC guest. He happened to be a kind man of 45 from London and whom, to my shame, I couldn't understand the moment he was being introduced to me. All I had to do was using those rehearsed phrases I'd been stuffing my mind with before meeting him. Like I said he'd been pretty kind and understanding, and he couldn't bring himself to turn me away. On the contrary, he patiently began to teach me a thing or two. After all, I had a rich vocabulary inside my upper storey. Only then, however, I quickly realised the harmful effects of all those Soviet textbooks I'd been naively using and sort of making myself believe I was a tolerable speaker of English. At my college, I was hearing a unique style of English whereas there was quite a different way of speaking, as I had to deal with the native speakers at the SPC. I was at a complete loss. I just couldn't make out at first where the problem actually lay because I'd been relying on my Russian teachers and textbooks for so damn long. Turned out in the end, however, that I didn't have the correct command of the modern English style. Like most other Russian learners of English I tried to speak harder than hard but it was far from being true English. The right style that was the only thing I'd never given a thought to. And then there was a long, hard and excruciating path of learning English all over again. The path I wish you'd never set your foot on. It took me twenty years to create a course of English especially designed for the Russians. The course that is sure to spare the necessity of your repeating my mistakes and the majority of all those before you. The course, which has already proved capable of teaching any Russian-speaking person competent English for only two years. Now it leaves you to decide whether the course we're offering you is worthwhile. Or maybe you still prefer those universal courses that are calculated for the whole human race around the globe. Bear in mind, however, that they do not carry a single Russian word and they completely ignore the linguistic peculiarities of different languages! Hello, our potential pupils. My name is Olga and I won't tell how old I am, but just that I'm a teacher and the full-fledged co-author of this course. As an experienced teacher, I greatly appreciate the teaching stuff because it enormously easifies my job to make your progress to the utmost. And first and foremost, this course is mighty logical and intelligible. It literally turns you on and keeps excited from the very beginning to the end. The tenses are considered to be the most difficult part in many English courses, but not in ours. We teach in a natural way starting from the simple things. And when you reach those complicated tenses, they won't look as such any more on account of our unique teaching methods.
